About Concern Worldwide

Concern Worldwide, founded in 1968, is a non-governmental, international humanitarian organisation dedicated to reducing suffering and working towards the ultimate elimination of extreme poverty in the 28 of the world's poorest countries. Concern's programs in livelihoods, education, health, HIV and AIDS, and emergency relief target the root causes of poverty. Concern is committed to reaching the most vulnerable, even in the most difficult of circumstances. In the past year, Concern reached over 9.8 million people.

Concern has been working in Kenya since 2002, working in the poorest communities in both urban and rural areas. Concern Kenya's programs in education, HIV and AIDS, livelihoods, health, and nutrition are implemented in partnership with people in rural and urban communities and 37 local partners. The Concern team also provides rapid, lifesaving humanitarian aid in emergencies as they arise.

In the slums of Nairobi, Concern works with the poorest of the poor, developing practical and lasting solutions to poverty through the following programs.

EDUCATION- SECURING ACCESS TO EDUCATION FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE SLUM CHILDREN

In Nairobi's slums, there are only a handful of formal, government-funded primary schools, yet there are hundreds of thousands of children residing in these communities. Although the government of Kenya declared "free primary education for all" in 2003, children who live in Nairobi's massive, overcrowded slums have been denied their basic human right to education.

HIV AND AIDS - IMPROVING QUALITY OF LIFE FOR VULNERABLE CHILDREN

Concern's HIV and AIDS program improves the capacity of local partners to provide peer education and counseling for primary school children in 24 schools. The program helps children by:
